When most people think of angels, they think of winged beings – most notably aligned with the archangel archetypes like Archangels Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, and so on.
However, angels are actually very prominent across many cultures, religions, and traditions.
In fact, they are quite universal and most importantly a PERSONAL experience. They can be summed up as unseen beings who are here to guide you and light your path with authenticity, devotion, love, and service.
The word “angel” comes from the Greek word angelos, which means “one who brings a message.”
The Hebrew word for “angel” is malak, which also means “messenger,” ultimately angels are – “messengers of God.”
Here are how angels translate to cultures/traditions around the world:
- The Aboriginals – one of the oldest traditions on earth believed in beings you call on in times of struggle, fear, drought. They were of an unseen presence of intelligence that is an extension of the Creator. These ancestral beings were teachers that can be connected to/channeled by elders in the tribe. Paintings on caves even show tall slender beings with halos of light, big black eyes, and wing-like shapes.
- Buddhism – The bodhisattvas are essentially the archangelic beings of buddhism. The aid in the removal of suffering, fear, and offer guidance back towards light.
- The Druids believe in the 4 elements of nature and the guardians of the invisible nature are the 5th being. There are beings that are everywhere, they just go by a different names. They are a force/being the Druids connected to.
- India/Hinduism – the Devas in India are considered the lesser gods of the force of God. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna is essentially an angel for Arjuna. He comes as an incarnation of Vishnu to guide him to make best decision for overcoming internal conflicts.
- Islam – angels are beings known as the malaikah
- Abrahamic Religions (Judaism, Christianity) – angels are angels as we most frequently know and see them depicted with wings
Ultimately your angels/guides/protectors show themselves in a way that is specific to you. Your experience is YOUR experience. The can show themselves in sounds/songs, visuals (numbers, rainbows, feathers, coins, pictures), a felt-sense, or even through smell and taste!
If you feel disconnected from them, start with a simple request. “If there is an angel here, thank you for making your presence known to me.”
One of the best things you can do is ask for a specific sign you want from your angels. It is about building and deepening your Well of Faith continually so you can live in their flow and guidance.
