In Japanese, “Rei” means “Universal Spirit” and “Ki” is analogous to “Chi” or prana – the non-physical universal life energy flowing through and surrounding everything. As such, Reiki can be translated to “spiritually guided life energy”.
Reiki is a hands-on or hands-off form of channeled energetic healing. The practitioner acts as a channel for universal life energy to enter the recipient. Reiki can never cause harm and ultimately directs itself to where the recipient needs it most.
The experience can be different for everyone, ranging from states of deep peace and relaxation, to physical sensations, visions, deeply profound spiritual experiences, or nothing at all.
In short, reiki is the Universe’s way of bringing you back to your natural and aligned state of being.
Reiki was rediscovered in Japan by Mikao Usui in the late 1800s. After meditating for 21 days in front of a waterfall, a bright white light came to him. In a download, he received all of the reiki symbols and information about reiki as a way to facilitate healing within peoples’ energy and physical bodies. In the days following, he healed a number of townspeople through the miraculous power of reiki energy healing.
Chujiro Hayashi, a naval medical doctor in Japan became the only official Reiki Master after Usui Sensi’s passing. He expanded reiki into a whole system of healing, perfecting the various hand positions for healing of the organs and the physical body. Hawayo Takata then brought reiki to the West where it is now used in hospitals, healing ceremonies, and private practice around the world.
